If gorilla trekking is on your Uganda itinerary, your first question is usually the same: how much does a permit cost and how do you secure one? This guide breaks down the essentials so you can plan with confidence.
What is a gorilla permit?
A gorilla permit is the official access pass issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) that allows you to trek to a habituated gorilla family in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
How much does a gorilla permit cost?
Permit pricing varies by residency and can change. As a rule of thumb, rates are highest for non-residents, lower for foreign residents, and lowest for East African citizens. Always confirm current prices directly with UWA or your tour operator before booking.
Good to know: Gorilla permits are limited each day. Availability is the bigger challenge, especially in peak months.
How to get a permit (the simple path)
- Pick your travel window. Start with your preferred months and be flexible by a few days if possible.
- Choose a trekking sector. Bwindi has multiple sectors; availability differs by sector.
- Reserve through a trusted operator. They coordinate permits, logistics, and timing, and can advise the best fit for your itinerary.
- Confirm and pay. Once issued, permits are generally non-refundable and tied to specific dates.
When should you book?
If you are traveling in peak seasons (June to August, December to February), aim to book several months in advance. For shoulder months, you may have more flexibility.
What the permit covers
- A guided trek to a gorilla family
- Up to one hour with the gorillas once found
- Ranger and tracker support
Not included: transportation to the park, lodging, tips, or meals (unless packaged by your operator).
Tips to avoid permit stress
- Plan early for peak months.
- Keep 1 to 2 buffer days in your itinerary in case you want to adjust sectors.
- Travel with a reputable operator who has a track record securing permits.
